FITCHBURG — The Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts announced $31,200 in grant funds have been given to Heywood Hospital in Gardner and UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital on Monday. The money will allow the hospitals to purchase respirators for Emergency Department staff.

“Hospitals and health-care workers are working tirelessly to care for those who have COVID-19,” Foundation President Steve Adams said. “The Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts is thrilled to be able to help local hospitals in our community acquire the supplies they need to protect the health and safety of their nurses, doctors and other staff on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The grant funds allowed the hospitals to provide respirators and filters that offer more protection than the standard medical-grade face masks to their staff treating patients during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
