FirstLight: New floating fishway technology helps fish migrate on Quinebaug River

PRESTON, Conn. (WFSB) – A first-of-its-kind system in the United States is now up and running on the Quinebaug River, helping fish migrate while a dam makes power.
The floating fishway at the Tunnel Generating Station helps species like herring and shad make their way upstream. It is the modern-day fish ladder.
An old-fashioned fish ladder is steel and concrete and cannot be moved. The floating fishway can move around to help more fish get upriver.
Fishheart, a company from Finland, created the technology, which guides the fish, photographs them and uses AI to collect data. It is the first system of this size in the United States.
