Hyde Square Task Force: Mayor Wu renews push for tax on high-dollar real estate sales

In Jamaica Plain’s Latin Quarter, a developer has at long last begun to revitalize the old Blessed Sacrament church, a community landmark that has sat vacant for the last two decades.

It is an expensive project,costing over $40 million,with millions in contributions from the city, state, and federal governments to help pay for developer Pennrose’s transformation of the church into 55 units of affordable housing, all while maintaining the building’sbrick facade and soaring windows. And it’s a perfect example, Mayor Michelle Wu said at an event there Thursday, of why Boston needs more funding for affordable housing to finance more projects like this one.

So she’s going back to Beacon Hill to make the case for it.
