Innocence Project: New Michigan bills would make it easier to overturn wrongful convictions

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Two bills moving through the Michigan legislature would expand access to post-conviction DNA testing for inmates seeking to overturn convictions, even those who pleaded guilty.
House Bill 6092 is sponsored by Representative Kara Hope (D-Holt) and co-sponsored by 16 state representatives. Senate Bill 1035 is sponsored by Senator Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) and co-sponsored by four state senators.
The measures would update a statute roughly 25 years old to reflect advancements in DNA testing technology and remove outdated technological restrictions, according to advocates and exonerees who support the legislation.
“The current statute prevents people from even accessing evidence of their innocence,” said Roderic Pippen, with the Organization of Exonerees.
