IP Midwest: Bills seeking to overhaul Missouri appeals process receive bi-partisan support

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The fight for innocence could soon be easier in Missouri after two proposals to overhaul the state’s appeals process received bi-partisan support.

After being sentenced to life in prison for a 1988 robbery in which no one was injured, a clerical error listed his sentence at 1001 years, Paige Spears exhausted every avenue to appeal his sentence.

“If the governor wouldn’t have commuted my sentence I would still have a number of years to do in prison before I was even eligible to see the parole board,” Paige Spears said.
