KIPP: The othering of a Lynn charter school

Imagine a K-12 public school where nearly 9 out of 10 graduates enroll in college. A school that state education officials say fosters “an environment where families contribute to school decision-making processes.” A school that one top education official described as “across the board” above the state average in achievement.
If you thought that school sounded appealing, you wouldn’t be alone: KIPP Academy Lynn, a public charter school, has a waiting list of more than 1,700 students. That is equivalent to 1 out of every 10 students in the Lynn Public Schools system.
But the vast majority of those wait-list students will not get in because the school’s total enrollment is capped by the state. It accepts just 127 new students into its kindergarten class each year, and open seats in higher grades are scarce because of the school’s high retention rate.
