New England Donor Services: After a 327-day wait for a new heart, one CT family’s story highlights the stakes of organ donation
That’s how long Ashley Stanger’s 4-year-old son was waiting in the hospital for a new heart. For nearly a year, the family endured constant checkups, major surgeries, close calls and nights spent sleeping at the hospital after her son, Lincoln, was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in early 2024.
Then, late one March night in 2025, the call came that the Stanger family had been waiting for — New England Donor Services had found a match for Lincoln’s heart. She said it was a mix of emotions at first, but she knew it was their chance for her son to live a more normal life.
Now, nearly a year since his transplant surgery, Lincoln, now 5, is back to his energetic self, Stanger said, attending school and filling his days with sports.
