New England Donor Services: After a 327-day wait for a new heart, one CT family’s story highlights the stakes of organ donation

​That’s how long Ashley Stanger’s 4-year-old son was waiting in the hospital for a new heart. For nearly a year, the family endured constant checkups, major surgeries, close calls and nights spent sleeping at the hospital after her son, Lincoln, was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in early 2024. 

​Then, late one March night in 2025, the call came that the Stanger family had been waiting for — New England Donor Services had found a match for Lincoln’s heart. She said it was a mix of emotions at first, but she knew it was their chance for her son to live a more normal life.

​Now, nearly a year since his transplant surgery, Lincoln, now 5, is back to his energetic self, Stanger said, attending school and filling his days with sports.
