New England Donor Services: Vt. family celebrates toddler’s first Mother’s Day out of the hospital

Spencer Boule is 19 months old, but this is the first Mother’s Day he is out of the hospital with a new heart.

Shannon Boule and her wife learned their son had a rare heart condition when he was 6 weeks old. He was going to need a heart transplant, but doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital hoped medication would keep him stable in the meantime and sent the family home.

“We were home for three days before his symptoms returned and he actually had some additional symptoms just to show that his body just really wasn’t going to be able to do what it needed to do to, you know, basically stay alive,” Shannon Boule said.
