New Heights Charter School of Brockton: How Early College Programs Expand Access To Higher Education

At New Heights Charter School in Brockton, Massachusetts, college isn’t a distant goal but a daily reality.

As the state’s first “wall-to-wall early college program,” New Heights embeds college courses into the curriculum, providing students with the opportunity to gain college credits starting in the ninth grade. By graduation, more than half of New Heights students have earned an associate degree, along with their high school diploma. Everyone leaves the public charter high school with at least one semester of college credits, setting them on a path to transfer those credits to a two- or four-year college or university and reduce the time, stress and cost of attaining a college degree.

“We truly believe that all students can be prepared for and attend college,” said Omari Walker, who cofounded New Heights in 2016, along with Janice Manning and Jessica Geier, and currently serves as the school’s executive director.
