Sustainserv: Five things you need to know, Canadian tuxedos and the World Cup is finally here
One local company that won’t be at the Boston games — but will likely be at the Houston games — is Boston-based Sustainserv, a global management-consulting firm that helps clients with their sustainability strategies. The local company won an RFP to help the Houston World Cup organizing group document its sustainability goals, including climate and human-rights impacts.
I spoke with Matthew Gardner, managing partner at Sustainserv this week, and he told me that while the World Cup may never be carbon net-zero — just think of the private jets and giant watch parties each city sees for its games — documenting the energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions and infrastructure upgrades help keep sustainability priorities top of mind.
In Houston, Sustainserv is helping officials monitor and track local air quality and work with vendors to use nonpolluting energy sources for making sandwiches, for example, or document and provide assurances around living wages and confirming that their swag-production supply chain doesn’t include human rights violators.
