UP Education Network: Preparing students for today’s demands from employers

Today’s job market demands an ever-evolving skill set. To prepare the future workforce, schools will need to integrate academic learning with practical, real-world experiences. To accomplish this, employers will need to be willing to engage with the community to provide direct exposure to professional opportunities that help students build durable skills — communication, resilience, critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving — that will serve them throughout their careers, no matter the paths they choose or how the job landscape changes. This work can’t start early enough in a student’s development.
This spring, the Kraft Analytics Group (KAGR) and other local companies, including Dell, Novanta, Suffolk Construction, and PTC partnered with two Dorchester public schools — UP Academy Dorchester and UP Academy Holland — to give 285 middle-school students exposure to how their interests can translate into professional opportunities. UP Academy serves students furthest from opportunity and makes it a priority to deliver immersive, career-connected learning coordinated with academic expectations.
